Australia & New Zealand
Wine has been made in Australia and New Zealand since the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The species of grapes, vitis vinifera, that is used to produce most wine is not native to Oceania. So, Australia and New Zealand produce wine from well known international varieties; there are no indigenous varieties. Since the terroir is so different from Europe, wines produced in Australia and New Zealand can be very different from those produced by the same grapes in Europe.

(I know that this is not from Australia or New Zealand! The most respected dessert wine from Australia is muscat from Rutherglen. Unfortunately, it can’t be found in New Orleans. This wine will give you a sense of what a Rutherglen muscat is like.)
