dessert

Dessert wines can range from semi-sweet to luscious.  They can be red or white.  The late harvest Riesling and the Kindzmarauli are semi-sweet, while the Port and the Sauternes are sweeter.

Hogue Late Harvest Riesling (semi-sweet)

$10.99 Total Wine (available at many grocery stores)

Late harvest means that the grapes stay on the vine until they start to shrivel, concentrating sugars and flavors.  This wine pairs beautifully with apple and banana desserts.

Teliani Valley Kindzmarauli

$25.99 Total Wine (available at other shops)

Made from the Saperavi grape, this semi-sweet wine pairs beautifully with bold cheeses.

Porto Morgado Ruby Port

$7.99 Trader Joe’s

Port is a sweet fortified wine from Portugal.  Trader Joe's also sells a tawny Port, but it's not very tawny.  The ruby Port is a great buy!  This ruby Port pairs perfectly with dark chocolate.

Chateau Cantegril Sauternes

$29.99 Total Wine

Sauternes is a wine from Bordeaux made from grapes that have been affected by noble rot.  The fungus punctures tiny holes in the skin allowing moisture to evaporate.  The loss of moisture concentrates flavors and acids.  This wine has flavors and aromas of nuts and caramel.  It pairs well with crème caramel and king cake.
